How dentists rank in Google Maps and local search

The map pack decides more dental enquiries than the organic results below it. Here is what actually influences those three positions.

Ask a practice owner how they rank on Google and they will usually describe their website position. Ask their patients how they found the practice and a large share will describe tapping a listing on a map without ever seeing a website.

Those three map results are the most valuable property in local dental search, and they are governed by a different set of factors from the organic listings underneath them.

Three things decide map rankings

Google describes local ranking as a combination of relevance, distance and prominence. That sounds vague, but each translates into something you can actually work on, and understanding which of the three is limiting you saves a great deal of wasted effort.

Relevance: does your profile say what you do

Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. A practice that has not listed implants as a service is less likely to appear for implant searches, however good its website is.

This is the easiest factor to improve and the most commonly neglected. Primary category, secondary categories, individual services, and an accurate description all contribute. Most profiles we audit are missing several treatments the practice actively provides.

Distance: the factor you cannot change

Distance is measured from wherever the person is searching, not from your practice. This is why your rankings appear inconsistent: you rank well when searching from the practice and poorly from across town, and both observations are correct.

You cannot change your location, but you can be realistic about your catchment. Concentrating effort where you can genuinely compete beats spreading it across an area you will never win.

Prominence: how established you appear

Prominence covers how well known and well regarded your practice appears across the web. Review count and rating contribute, as do mentions on other sites, directory listings and general web presence.

This is the slowest factor to build and the one that creates a durable advantage, because a competitor cannot replicate years of accumulated reviews and citations quickly.

What to fix, in order

The mistakes that actively hurt

Some common tactics do measurable damage. Keyword stuffing the business name, for example adding best dentist Miami to your listing, violates guidelines and risks suspension. So does listing a virtual office or a location you do not staff.

Review gating, where you filter for happy patients before requesting a review, breaches platform policy and is straightforwardly dishonest. Incentivised reviews carry the same problem. The short term gain is not worth the risk to a listing that may be your single largest source of enquiries.

A suspended Google listing can take weeks to reinstate. For most dental practices that is the most expensive marketing outage available.

Multi location practices need extra care

Groups run into problems single practices do not. Each location needs its own profile, its own genuinely distinct page on the website, and consistent information that does not confuse search engines about which site serves which area.

Duplicated location pages with the town name swapped are the most common error, and they compete with each other rather than ranking. Each page needs real, location specific content to earn its position.

How long it takes

Profile corrections often show within two to six weeks, because much of that work is fixing errors rather than building authority. Review and citation improvements accumulate over months, and prominence is a long game.
